SITA Solutions

Today, SITA is providing value-added services to the air transportation industry world-wide through SITA INC (SITA Information Network Services Company Limited), and provides total network solutions through SITA SC (International Air Telecommunications Association) network. For its Customers, SITA is the only service Organization which forms service teams in providing comprehensive and full Customer service.
SITA's value-add plan includes application services and applications for airlines, airports, aviation departments, aircraft and e-commerce, as well as system compatibility, end-to-end technical and facilities services. It also includes network services for system integration, introduction of external resources and consultancy, and supports sophisticated system solutions.
Guided by the principle of joint co-operation, SITA is providing basic network services through SITA SC for today's air transportation industry. SITA has over 50 years of experience in the industry and has a unique advantage in operation mechanism - sharing of costs by the member Organizations. The main purpose of this mechanism is to provide a low unit cost competitive service, so as to maintain its unique position in the industry. Through its special relation with EQUANT (a FT-owned company), it provides Network Services with its partners on an equal basis.

Milestones of SITA

  • 1949 founded by major airlines in Brussels, Belgium
  • 1984 aeroplanes started to communicate via VHF AIRCOM SITA CUTE (public terminal equipment) system started to be used in Germany and USA simultaneously
  • 1989 SITA members extended to computerised reservation system providers, air maintenance companies, travel services, air cargo contractors, airport authorities and other air transportation related Organizations
  • 1991 Megabyte transmission network went into operation in London, Los Angeles, New York and Paris. SITA launched WORLDTRACER, the luggage tracking system that can trace missing parcels in 100 days. SCITOR was established (now EQUANT ) to provide value-added network services in many countries.
  • 1993 SITA bought 70% shares of Novus (now part of Equant) to provide high-performance exchange processing software
  • 1995 SITA launched AeroNet as a telecommunications confederation network for air transportation and aviation companies
    SITA launched the Global Voice Service SITA collaborated with STH (ITS, NOVUS and SCITOR) to found a joint venture, and developed a unitary and seamlessly connected network system for which they share the operation and management rights.
  • 1996 SITA and SABRE Computer Services Company signed 400 MUS$ contract adding 24,000 network ports to the Network in the USA.
    ETAS, the first electronic travel authorisation system in the world, was launched via SITA's Multicultural Affairs branch in Australia.
  • 1997 SITA earned annual revenue of 1 billion US$ and had over 640 members.
    VARIG started providing dynamic network resources for SITA
  • 1998 Air France signed a 7-year, 160 MUS$ contract with SITA.
    STH changed into Equant NV, composed of 3 operating sections: Equant Network Services (formerly Scitor), Equant Integration Services (formerly ITS) and Equant Applications Services (formerly Novus).
    SITA maintains its network joint operation partnership with Equant.
  • 1999 SITA celebrated 50 years of air transportation services.
  • 2000 On January 1, SITA INC NV was born as a new business entity. Together with SITA SC, it commits to provide value-added solutions to the air transportation industry.
